Tom Markowski's Top 5: Boys basketball leagues

Tom Markowski's Boys Basketball Rankings (Dec 12, '05)

Boys basketball preview: Teams to watch
High School sports editor Jane Bos ranks the top teams to watch

1. South Christian
OK, the Sailors graduated seven seniors from last year's O-K Gold and Class B state championship team. Sure, that is tough to overcome. But they have David Kool back. Need I say more?

2. East Grand Rapids
A trio of three-year players -- guards and cousins Kelvin Grady and DeMarcus Grady and too-tall Justin Anyijong (6-foot-8) -- make the Pioneers a power again in the O-K White. Add in senior Eric McLaughlin. And wow.

3. Rockford
A subpar 10-11 record last season had the Rams down. Oh, but they will be back up this year. And if defense wins championships -- the O-K Red and beyond -- who knows how far? Fourth-year player Nick Wendling and junior Bryan Pasciak give them an edge.

4. Tri-unity Christian
The Defenders reached last year's Class D state semifinals, and return two key players in shooting star Jon Visser and burly Andy Venema. It's not a shock that they should win the River Valley -- and make a long tournament run -- again.

5. Creston
Can the Polar Bears finally do it this season? If they can hold it together, they are the team to beat in the City, led by seniors Jovonne Augustus, Andrew Harris and Rico Gaddis.

6. Northview
The Wildcats boast three returning three-year players, all of whom are top-notch. Look for Spencer Olson, Derek Brooks and Dan Nunn to give EGR fits in the O-K White race.

7. Jenison
The young guns are growing up. Ty Tanis, now a junior, and Wes Trammell, now a sophomore, have made Wildcats fans happy since they were freshmen. The grins should expand this season.

8. Cedar Springs
The Red Hawks, playing in the O-K Blue for the first time, return their top six players. Pencil in the big crossover matchup with South Christian, pitting the Blue and the Gold champ, on March 3, 2006.

9. Catholic Central
The Cougars certainly will challenge Creston for tops in the City. But first, nine of them need to find their basketball legs after a long football run to the state finals.

10. Calvin Christian
Expect the Squires to do monstrous things in their first year in the O-K Silver and in their first year back in Class C in about a decade. Matt Veltema, who can fire from 3-point range, leads the way.
