Rockford wins Metro title despite loss to Hudsonville

Ryan Rosendall did it again for the Hudsonville basketball team. For the first 31 minutes of the Eagles' game at Rockford Tuesday, Rosendall hadn't scored a point. But the senior guard hit five of six free throws in the final 43 seconds that helped Hudsonville to a 65-62 victory over the Rams. Rockford, however, clinched the O-K Red Metro title outright after Forest Hills Central beat Jenison 69-53 on Tuesday night. It's the third time this season Rosendall has helped clinch victories from the foul line with time running out.

"When I get into the game, I like to be on the line," Rosendall said. "I have confidence in my free-throw shooting. I work hard on it in practice, and hitting clutch free throws is one of my better skills." Hudsonville coach Kevin Wolma agrees. "He is the best clutch free-throw shooter that I've coached," Wolma said. "Actually, I was surprised he missed one." But the missed free throw didn't hurt the Eagles, as the Rams missed a last-second 3-pointer that would have tied that game. And the loss didn't hurt Rockford in its attempt to win the O-K Red Metro. Even though his team lost for the second straight game in the conference, Rockford coach Steve Majerle found out after Tuesday's game that Jenison had lost, giving the Rams the outright championship.

Rockford finished the conference season with an 8-4 record, the first time a conference champion in the O-K Red has had four league losses. "We are down; we really wanted to win this game," Majerle said. "But we will take this as a blessing playing without (all-state senior point guard Michael Redell)." Redell missed his second straight game with an injured ankle. "It was a tough loss tonight, but I was pleased with our effort," Majerle said. "Hopefully, the guys have the feel-goods about themselves after tonight, and when we get Michael back, that will make us that much better." Wolma knew Redell missed Rockford's game against Jenison on Friday, but wasn't sure what to expect Tuesday. "He is a tough kid, and we went into the weekend assuming that he was going to play," Wolma said. "When he didn't, it did change our plan, but they still play the same way even without Redell."

The Eagles had a 31-24 rebounding advantage and had three players score in double figures -- Brek Trevino with 17 points, Jesse Reimink with 16 and Brandon Bosch with 10. The Rams received strong performances from Michael Steinbach and Mark Russell, who each scored 18 points. "Coming in here I knew (Rockford) would play their guts out because they didn't want to share the title," Wolma said. "For us, all we were playing for was pride and the love of the game, and the guys really responded."
